to help people make wellÂinformed decisions about healthcare by
preparing, maintaining and promoting the accessibility of systematic
reviews of the effects of healthcare interventions.
The Cochrane Collaboration was established as an international organisation
in 1993 and has since developed a wide range of resources and materials to
help guide newcomers in the philosophy of the organisation and systematic
review processes.
The purpose of these web pages is to provide a basic, single reference
source with an overview to the Cochrane Collaboration and Cochrane
systematic reviews for health care professionals wishing to undertake a
review. These pages are not intended to replace the existing resources which
have been developed by the Cochrane Collaboration and it's associated
Centres/Groups, but rather they highlight important information and make
reference to the full resource guides where appropriate.
The Cochrane support services available through the Mater Research Support
Centre are provided in collaboration with the Centre for Clinical Studies, Mater
Health Services Brisbane and it's experienced Cochrane reviewers and support
personnel. Support services include (though are not limited to):
editorial and
methodological advice; technical support, liaison with Cochrane Review Groups;
literature searching; reference management; and where possible, content advice.
Advice on the Interpretation of the results of Cochrane review and how to use
Cochrane systematic reviews is also provided by staff at the MRSC.
Resources are provided and the MRSC would be happy to receive feedback and suggestions on additional information or resources that may be useful; feedback and suggestions can be made by contacting our Executive Support Officer Ms. Amber Baillie.
Cochrane Systematic reviews on the Cochrane Library - Access to the library is free within Australia and there is no need to logon.
Guide to the Cochrane Library - The Cochrane Library brings together in one place research which looks at the effectiveness of different health care treatments and interventions. It is recognised as the best single source of information on the effects of health care.
The Cochrane Collaboration - The Cochrane Collaboration is an international not-for-profit research organisation that aims to help people make informed decisions about health care. It is a registered charity in the United Kingdom.
The Australasian Cochrane Centre - The Australasian Cochrane Centre is one of a number of Cochrane centres established worldwide to co-ordinate the activities of the Cochrane Collaboration. The Centre is part of the Monash Institute of Health Services Research, located at the Monash Medical Centre, Melbourne.
Cochrane Consumer Network - The Cochrane Consumer Network's site contains a range of health care information, and information to help people understand health care research. It is also a resource for consumers and others who want to become involved in the Collaboration or other health research activities.
James Lind Library - The James Lind Library contains pages illustrating the evolution of fair tests of medical treatments. These pages contain examples from nearly a hundred books and journal articles, illustrated by images of the key passages of text. New records are being added continuously, as well as biographical material, portraits, translations, commentaries, and other relevant material.
Principles of the Collaboration
The Cochrane Collaboration's work is based on ten key principles:
Structure of the Collaboration
Collaborative Review Groups
The main work of the Collaboration is done by fifty Collaborative Review Groups, within which Cochrane Reviews prepared and maintained. The members of these groups - researchers, healthcare professionals, people using the health services (consumers), and others - have come together because they share an interest in generating reliable, up-to-date evidence relevant to the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of particular health problems or groups of problems.
Methods Groups
The science of research synthesis is still relatively young and evolving rapidly. Methods Groups have been established to develop methodology and advise the Collaboration on how the validity and precision of systematic reviews can be improved. For example, the Statistical Methods Group is assessing ways of handling different kinds of data for statistical synthesis, and the Applicability and Recommendations Methods Group is exploring important questions about drawing conclusions regarding implications for practice, based on the results of reviews.
Fields
Fields focus on dimensions of health care other than health problems, such as the setting of care (e.g. primary care), the type of consumer (e.g. older people), or the type of intervention (e.g. vaccines). People associated with Fields search specialist sources for relevant studies, help to ensure that priorities and perspectives in their sphere of interest are reflected in the work of Collaborative Review Groups, compile specialized databases, co-ordinate activities with relevant agencies outside the Collaboration, and comment on systematic reviews relating to their particular area.
Consumer Network
The Cochrane Consumer Network provides information and a forum for networking among consumers involved in the Collaboration, and a liaison point for consumer groups around the world.
Centres
The work of Collaborative Review Groups, Methods Groups, Fields and the Consumer Network is facilitated in a variety of ways by the work of a dozen Cochrane Centres around the world. They share responsibility for helping to co-ordinate and support members of the Collaboration in areas such as training, and they promote the objectives of the Collaboration at national level.
Step by step guide to undertaking a Cochrane systematic review
Qualifications Required
Though membership with a Cochrane Review Group is not based upon any specific formal qualifications and there are no membership fees, there are a number of key requirements for Cochrane membership. One must:
1. Have suitable skills (and willingness to learn new ones)
2. Can volunteer personal time over an extended period
3. Work as part of a team
4. Support the aims of the Collaboration
5. Share the Collaboration's spirit of goodwill
Steps in the Review Process
The main steps involved in undertaking a Cochrane systematic review include title registration with one of the Cochrane Review Groups, followed by protocol and review development and finally regular updates of the review.
In order to get started, it is generally a good idea to search The Cochrane Library and/or inidual Cochrane Review Groups (CRG) (which have a remit related to your topic of interest) for existing protocols or reviews related to the title/question for which you wish to undertake a review to ensure that it hasn't already been done. Once you have defined your title/question in the Cochrane format [(intervention) for (problem) in (category)] you will need to contact the relevant CRG co-ordinator to obtain a title registration form, which on completion will then need to be submitted for consideration.
Following title registration, the protocol for the review must be developed. The protocol stage not only outlines the background to the problem and objectives of the review, but the methods that will be employed in the review process including the criteria set for considering studies for inclusion within the review (ie. types of participants, interventions, outcomes and studies); the search strategy for identifying studies; and the methods of review (ie. assessing trial quality, data management and analysis).
Once your protocol has been accepted for publication within The Cochrane Library, it's time to start the review process which involves implementing the search strategy and methods of review outlined in your protocol. The literature search will identify potentially relevant trials for inclusion within the review. Once trials have been identified, data extraction and analysis form the next step in the review process from which results, discussions and conclusions can be drawn.
For a more comprehensive guide to the various components of systematic review processes please refer to the Cochrane Reviewers' Handbook and/or the Open Learning Material for Reviewers.
Manuals, Guidelines & Software
The Cochrane Collaboration provides a number of resource materials to help assist reviewers undertake systematic reviews in a structured, uniform manner.
Reviewers' Handbook
The Reviewers' Handbook is the official document which described in detail the process of creating Cochrane systematic reviews.
The Cochrane Collaboration and the Cochrane Reviewers' Handbook focuses particularly on systematic reviews of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) because they are likely to provide more reliable information than other sources of evidence on the differential effects of alternative forms of healthcare. Systematic reviews of other types of evidence can also help those wanting to make better decisions about healthcare, particularly forms of care where RCTs have not been done and may not be possible or appropriate. The basic principles of reviewing research are the same, whatever type of evidence is been reviewed. Although the Cochrane Collaboration focuses mainly on systematic reviews of RCTs they address issues specific to reviewing other types of evidence when relevant.
The Cochrane Reviewers' Handbook can be either viewed online or downloaded from the following site:
http://www.cochrane.org/cochrane/hbook.htm
Review Manager Software (RevMan 4.2.2)
Review Manager (RevMan) is the Cochrane Collaboration's program for preparing and maintaining Cochrane reviews. Cochrane reviews are prepared using RevMan, and adhere to a structured format that is described in the Cochrane Reviewers' Handbook.
RevMan allows you to enter protocols, as well as full reviews. It can perform meta-analysis of the data entered, and present the results graphically using MetaView.
RevMan 4.2.2 software can be downloaded by going to the following site and following the instructions:
http://www.cochrane.org/cochrane/download.htm#REVM
RevMan User Guide
The aim of the user guide is to help with the preparation of a review within the Cochrane Collaboration's Review Manager software (RevMan). The user guide does not attempt to explain the methodological decisions you will need to make throughout your review but merely explains the functions and how to navigate your way around the program.
The RevMan User Guide can be downloaded in either PDF or Word format from the following site:
http://www.cochrane.org/cochrane/download.htm#REVM
Cochrane Style Guide
The Cochrane Style Guide (CSG) is designed to help reviewers and people responsible for copy editing to copy edit reviews and other documents produced by The Cochrane Collaboration in a consistent manner.
The Cochrane Style Guide can be downloaded in either PDF of Word format from the following site:
http://www.liv.ac.uk/lstm/ehcap/CSR/CSG.html
Open Learning Material for Reviewers
The Open Learning Material is designed to accompany the Cochrane Reviewers' Handbook in helping you gain the skills necessary to complete your review. It does not replace the Reviewers' Handbook, instead it provides a framework to progressing through the Handbook, supplementing it with examples and activities along the way. This resource takes a step-by-step approach to Cochrane reviews, exploring each step inidually, signposting appropriate links and references and providing examples and activities to help you make sense of the information. The material is organised in modules, each module relating to a consecutive section of your review. The Open Learning Material for Reviewers can be downloaded in HTML or PDF format from the following site:
http://www.cochrane-net.org/openlearning
