David has been Director of Neonatology at the Mater Mothers’ Hospital, Brisbane since 1977, Associate Professor since 1987 and Professor since 2001. He is widely recognised for his authorship of the textbooks Essential of Neonatal Medicine (3 Editions) and Primer of Neonatal Medicine and is the author of 126 Scientific Papers and 16 Chapters in Medical Textbooks. He is the Perinatal Editor of The Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health. He received Member of the Order of Australia in 1999, Centenary of Federation Medal in 2003, Olympic Games Torch Bearer in 2000 and was one of only 5 Queenslander’s to receive a Queensland Great Award in 2002.
It is with great sadness that the Mater community grieves the loss of
Professor Fung Yee Chan. Professor Chan was highly respected and is warmly
remembered for her deep commitment to excellence in caring for women and
families as an internationally acclaimed clinician and researcher. Fung Yee's
colleagues at the Mater Mothers' Research Centre gratefully acknowledge and
respect the value of her legacy, and are committed to continuing her work in the
spirit in which she would wish to be remembered.
Professor Chan was a graduate of the University of Hong
Kong. She received most of her specialist training in Hong
Kong, including one year as a Commonwealth Scholar in Oxford
in 1984. She was a Fellow of the Hong Kong, British, and
Australian & New Zealand Colleges of Obstetricians &
Gynaecologists.
Professor Chan migrated to Australia in 1993, and was awarded
the Certificate of Maternal Fetal Medicine of the RANZCOG in
1995. She was the first Queensland Obstetrician to receive
this Subspecialist certificate, and one of twelve in
Australia at that time. In the same year, she was awarded a
Doctor of Medicine from the University of Hong Kong. She was
the founding Director of Centre for Maternal Fetal Medicine
at the Mater Mothers’ Hospital, and held a conjoint
appointment as Professor and Senior Specialist in Maternal
Fetal Medicine at the University of Queensland, Mater
Mothers’ Hospital.
Professor Chan's interest covered all aspects of antenatal
screening, diagnosis, and therapy. Recognising the
difficulties in providing tertiary services poised by the
vast size of Australia, her team has successfully pioneered
the use of real-time tele-ultrasound to provide
sub-specialist expertise to regional centres in Queensland.
She received several National awards, and was invited to
scientific meetings overseas to present this work. As an
extension of their telemedicine expertise, her team also
tele-linked to a world renowned fetal therapy centre in
Florida (USA). This assisted in the successful introduction
of fetal endoscopic surgery to Australia. The Mater has now
performed the largest number of fetsocopic laser surgery for
severe twin to twin transfusion syndrome in the Asia
Pacific, with results matching the best centres around the
world.
