Statistics for Clinical Research: An Introductory Course

Date: Friday the 18th and Saturday the 19th of September
Venue: Kevin Cronin Room. Ground Floor, Whitty Building.
Cost: Registration is $150 (including GST) for all Mater staff and $500 (including GST) for external participants.
This includes light refreshments and resource materials.
Registrations close Friday 4th September.
As numbers for this course are limited it is recommended that participants register early.

Program Objectives:

  • Improve your understanding of the basics of statistics in clinical research (nature of probability, normal distribution, standard deviation, standard error and confidence intervals)
  • Enable you to gain a basic understanding of the following statistical analyses:
    • comparing two groups: differences in means (for example Student's t-test) and proportions (for example chi-squared, risk ratio, odds ratio)
      examining relationships between continuous variables: correlation and regression
    • prediction statistics: sensitivity and specificity, likelihood ratios, ROC curves
    • Assist you to understand the requirements for and estimating of sample sizes for common research models
  • Build on your knowledge of randomisation methods
  • Enable you to easily identify misuse of statistics
  • Improve your understanding of data management
  • Enhance your competency in the fundamentals of graphical presentation of data
